Definition for "Backyard/Amateur" Cook Team. 

A. Any member of the team who has not entered in and competed in more than twelve (12) sanctioned “Master Series” BBQ competitions in the past and;

B. Any person who has been a member of a team who has not been awarded a Grand Champion or Reserve Champion status in any KCBS Sanctioned “Master Series” competition and;

C. Any member of the team who has competed in three (3) or less “Master Series BBQ competitions within the current competition year. 

If any member of the team has entered in and competed in more than twelve (12) sanctioned “Master Series” BBQ competitions in the past, they are ineligible to participate in the Backyard competition.

Any person who was a member of a team who has competed in three (3) or less “Master Series” BBQ competitions within one (1) competition year may be considered a backyard cook and may declare or revert to such status. This includes the Chief Cook and/or Assistant Cooks. The only exclusion to this rule would be those judges cooking with a team to qualify for master judge status.

Individuals who feel they have extenuating circumstances may appeal to the KCBS Sanctioning committee or their designee for reconsideration as a backyard cook. Those requests must be made in writing within 90 days of the competition in question.

The Cook Team cannot have been compensated as a Pro BBQ Restaurant or Caterer. The purpose is to ensure a level playing field in the cooking competition. 

Participation requirements.

All PITMASTERS, please refer to the KCBS Backyard Sanctioned Rules link below.

Competition meat categories are Pork Ribs*, Chicken* Pork Roast* and Beef Brisket and must be provided by PITMASTERS. Amateur teams will prepare Pork Ribs* and Chicken*. (*KCBS required)

Meat for the Public Tastings will be provided by contest organizer.

All PITMASTERS must complete TFF Stanislaus County Health Department Applications. Late applications will not be accepted and your entry fee will NOT be refunded.

Spaces will be assigned. Check in will begin at Noon on Friday, August 11, 2017.

Purse Prizes & Trophies

All winners from the Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion and 1st through 5th Place finishers will be awarded cash prizes and trophies. The purse amounts are as follows:

Pro Teams: Chicken*, Pork Ribs*, Pork Shoulder* and Beef Brisket* as follows:

Grand Champion: $2,000.00
Reserve Champion: $1,000.00
1st place: $300.00
2nd place: $200.00
3rd place: $100.00
4th place: $75.00
5th place: $50.00

*These meats must be cooked to be considered for the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion

Amateur/Backyard Teams: Chicken* and Pork Ribs* as follows:

Grand Champion: $300.00
Reserve Champion: $200.00
1st place: $150.00
2nd place: $125.00
3rd place: $100.00
4th place: $50.00
5th place: $25.00

*These meats must be cooked to be considered for the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion

Pro Division "Battle of the Champions" Award: $100.00 (2015 Champion vs. 2016 Champion)

*This will be a separate category scored by CBJ Judges in the Rib Category ONLY.

People’s Choice Award: $200.00

*This is a separate category scored by the event community at-large. One token per person at ticket purchase.

Total Cash Prizes to be Awarded: $7,600.00
